I'm kind of confused by the Red River document...

First off... why does Red River have these codefied "ranks", when none of the other handbooks seem to have one? I mean, even the "military" talks about rank in generalities, but no real rules on what rank you can be. So everyone in the Military can start as a general, but everyone in Red River is "Bait"?

Second... why do we have these cool PC ranks that sound like action handles... and then these weird Russian sounding names for our NPC leadership? Especially when apparently Red River is Eqyptian in origin?

William
Everyone cannot play a general, specifically. It's why this passage is in the military handbook: "In order to be an Enlisted with rank above Sergeant, or a Commissioned Officer above Captain, you will need to speak to Plot." The ranking system is based off of actual military rank. If you ask Rich or any member of plot if you can play a general, it's a hard no.

If you talk to Kirsten you might be able to start as a character with some "rank" under your belt. Bringing some friends to play your squad can help your case too. I know there are some squad leaders in the military, who brought their own squad.

Most of the groups have some sort of ranking or job title system. THis includes Agency, Hands for the Future, and Wartime Salvage. I should know, I wrote those.  Smile

As for the Russian, I'll have to let Kirsten answer that. I think it was a fun stylistic choice.
IG, I think your second point is covered in the document: "The advanced ranks of Red River reflect his interest in early 1900’s Ukrainian military history."
William:
First - While every character started as "Bait" at some point you do not have to start the game at that rank. You can pick any rank from the PC ranks if you would like. If your character has been a ten year Red River combatant, then you should totally take the "Deadeye" rank. I personally encourage you not to take the highest possible rank so that you allow your character to have growth potential. However if it really makes you happy to grab the title "Elite Killer" you can totally do that.

Second - Jimmy answered this.
I have only one question. Are the Npc ranks an add on or is Elite the only one? For example if for some reason they were not an elite would the npc introduce them selves as Sotnyk killer, or would Sotnyk replace the killer rank until they earn Elite.
Elite is the only add-on rank and can be added on to any other rank (PC and NPC alike). For the PC ranks Elite is added on first (i.e. Elite Deadeye) . For the leadership (NPC ranks) Elite comes after the rank (i.e. Sotnyk Elite). As a note it is totally possible to be an Elite Enforcer. What this would mean is that the person has survived more than 50 missions but they did not show the merit to be promoted beyond Enforcer. Perhaps too many arguments with a superior officer or too much time drunk on duty.

For an NPC to have become one of those leadership ranks they have both completed the necessary missions to be promoted and they have shown extreme potential in leadership. A Sotnyk will always be someone who has survived at least 25 missions. Sotnyk then replaces the title of Killer. They could however be a Sonyk Elite if they have survived more than 50 missions.

Hopefully that answers the question.
Can you define "mission"?

1) Who assigns missions?
2) Is a mission a 'game weekend', or are there several missions over the weekend?
3) Will we have actual NPC's keeping track of 'missions'?
A mission is a goal to be accomplished during the event. (i.e recover this lost technology from the mad scientist in the bug infested lab)

1) Missions will be assigned by your Genacorp Liason or Sotnyk/Royovyi/Casseck
2) There will likely be 2-4 missions in a weekend. You should be able to advance one PC rank within a year-ish.
3) Sort of. I believe in delegation. If you aren't starting with an established group leader then an NPC may be assigned tracking your mission status. I'm still working out the logistic of this.

Cool, thanks Kirsten Smile
