What is a standard attack?

Any non-called swing. It's defined in the book.

Page 5:
Standard Attack: A claw, firearm, melee, or thrown weapon attack where no effect is called.

That's what I thought. So, um, doesn't a Shield Rank 2 or higher *already* block those things? Or is it saying that even if the attack misses the shield and hits the player, they can call it off?

Shields, by their nature, only block one side of you at a time. So yeah, if you get hit in the back or whatever, you can resist.

Yeah, it's a game mechanism to resist an attack that landed.
